L'histoire : A bad dad who abuses his son and his wife finally gets his comeuppance from a mysterious stranger.

La critique : Emotionally deranged people are rarely dull, and this family is a doozy. John Savage plays Ray West, a Vietnam vet, whose injury has turned him into the father and husband from hell.

Nastassja Kinski is his long-suffering wife, Kate, and Ryan Phillippe (rising young star from "I Know What You Did Last Summer" and the upcoming "54") is his teenage son, Jimmy, who is obsessively devoted to his two younger brothers. But shortly into the film, when Ray forces his wife and son to have sex because Jimmy's been drinking Dad's beer, the story takes the first of its many insane turns, leading to emotional highs and lows that seem arthritically ludi-crous. When Phillippe tells his rich girlfriend about his dark secret, he adds, "I'm so sorry you wasted your last two years of high school on me." She tear-fully responds, "There are some people you can talk to about this." You almost expect them to declare a truce and go to the prom together after all.

John Savage has played the damaged soldier before, and to much greater effect, in 1978's "The Deer Hunter" &emdash; here, his posturing and dreadful dialogue is a painful reminder of this underrated actor's wasted talent &emdash; while Kinski spends most of her time moaning and sighing. But the Oscar for Most Bizarre Performance goes to Shirley Knight, who appears late in the film and turns out to be the key to all things horrible.
